VISIT OF MO. GENERAL MA. INEZ FURTADO WITH GENERAL CONSULTOR SR. JOCELYN SALOMO TO KONG HUA SCHOOL, CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, PHILIPPINES

Sr. Mª. Inez with Sr. Teresa Yuen, and Sr. Eufemia Pomado, Sr. Lourdes Marzoña, partly hidden and some students of Kong Hua during the arrival at the school.
Sr. Mª. Inez and Sr. Jocelyn arrived at Kong Hua School in the morning of January 30, from Cebu. They were fetched from the airport by Sr. Teresa Yuen, Sr. Femy Pomado and Sr. Ma. Emma Quinquero.

After a short exchange of greetings with the sisters of the community, they headed to the school gym for the welcome greetings of the students, the faculty and staff and some parents. The Board of Trustees, officers of the Kong Hua Foundation, Inc. headed by the president, Mr. Quinciano Luy, Mr. Antonio Reyes, Mr. Henry Dy, Mr. Willy Limbonhai and the Limbonhai sisters were also present to welcome the visiting sisters.

The faculty and staff, the grade and high school and the Chinese department’s representatives took turns in giving their warm messages of welcome to the school and to the “City of Golden friendship”.
Deep gratitude and appreciation to the Congregation of the Hijas de Jesus and the sisters’ mission of Christian education at Kong Hua School the last 22 years were repeatedly expressed. With those sentiments was a sincere request for the Hijas de Jesus sisters to continue their work at KHS. Sr. Mª. Inez gave her response to the welcome greetings in Spanish which was dutifully translated by Sr. Joy in English. In clear term or language, she told the attending educative community that the Hijas de Jesus could no longer continue their presence at Kong Hua School not only because there were fewer Hijas de Jesus sisters in the Congregation now, but also because there are other urgent calls in the world today which the sisters are called to work. The Hijas de Jesus Sisters belong to the world. She challenged those who have been formed in the spirit of Mother Candida Ma. de Jesus to take the responsibility of carrying on the mission started by the Sisters.

As Cagayan de Oro is the “City of Friendship“ the Hijas de Jesus sisters will always keep and treasure the friendship with the Cagayan de Oro people.
Sr. Mª. Inez and Sr. Jocelyn met with Fr. Gil Escalante, SSJV, Parish priest of the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Community. He reiterated the appeal for the sisters to remain at Kong Hua School, to which Sr. Mª. Inez gave the same answer. This was the same position she communicated to Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, S.J., Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro in their short visit to the Archbishop’s House in the afternoon of the same day.

Early in January 31, Saturday, Mo. Ma. Inez and Sr. Joy with the sisters of KHS community and Sr. Femy Pomado went to see the congregation’s property, a little farm at Ulaliman, El Salvador. The farm house is right close to the Divine Mercy National Shrine, so the sisters took the opportunity to walk near the towering and impressive statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the sea. Here one can feel the “depth and height”, the overpowering love and mercy of Jesus Christ. They took a refreshing coconut drink from the trees of the farm and headed to see nearby KHS Pastoral Center.

The one on one encounter of each sister with Mo. Ma. Inez were heart warming experiences, to personally know her and the Congregation today through her at the same time to be known by her, to share how we feel about leaving KHS and our concerns and desires for the Philippines Province. This made one feel a strong and loving sense of belonging to the body congregation and be challenged to journey as an Hijas de Jesus in the world today in a way that may be different from what one is used to think and live in the past, yet faithful to the charism.
Mo. Ma. Inez and Sr. Joy came back to Kong Hua School on February 3 from Catarman, Camiguin. The community of Catarman came with them. In the afternoon, we had our joint community encounter. Mo. Ma. Inez answered the questions asked with clarity and passion especially on the GC Determination on Obedience, “our way of living the relationship of obedience – government”. The session was animated and the sisters felt challenged to live obedience as a basic attitude of listening and to identify oneself with Jesus, the obedient Son of the Father.
The process, the responsibility in the joint search for the will of God both by the sister and her Superior were well answered as well as question like “why have we to send our young sisters to other province when we need them here too”. Mother General gave a beautiful answer a wider and more deeper perspective in understanding one's geographical province in the light of the global congregation today.

MO. GENERAL’S CANONICAL VISIT TO CATARMAN, CAMIGUIN, WITH SR. JOCELYN SALOMO

Seated with Mother General, Mª. Inez, Sr. Eufemia Pomado; standing at the back with Sr. Jocelyn; Srs. Marilou Guillano, Esther Lapitan and Melchora de los Reyes.
On February 1, 2009, after the Holy Mass at the Xavier University Chapel attended by Srs. Mª. Ines, Jocelyn Salomo, and Eufemia Pomado, left for Camiguin Island. At mass, they were accompanied by Srs. Teresa Yuen, and Lourdes Marzoña.
At the warf, Sr Esther Lapitan waited for them who brought them home to Catarman, where they were warmly welcomed by the rest of the community. Immediately, Mother General Mª.Inez Furtado went around to see the different parts of the house and its surroundings. A mutual feeling of at-home-ness brought about an atmosphere of fraternity among the Sisters. Lunch followed. While at “sobre mesa”, each one was enthusiastic to share about life and mission even with their little “crooked” Spanish but “no importa” since she could read and interpret well between the lines what each Sister meant to say. This was also true especially during the individual conference with her. This brought more life, more challenge and newness in the community. After her conference, Sr. Mª. Inez expressed that she wanted to go around and see some parts of the town of Catarman. This was followed by a communitarian and thanksgiving prayer.
The next day February 2, right after Holy Mass, the community celebrated the renewal of the vows of Sr. Marilou Guillano at the community chapel. The renewal was made more significant with the presence of Mother General and Sr. Jocelyn, in the spirit of simplicity as well as spirit of universalism and sense of body. This was followed with a simple and casual agape.
In the afternoon, the schedule was to see the different apostolic areas of the community. It was however a rainy day which enabled them to see only three areas. Despite of heavy rain and gloomy weather, did not hinder Mother General’s desire to see and reach out to the poor.

They also visited Camiguin Polytechnic State College,
and a of the housing project.

She met and had a short encounter with the leaders while they were having their monthly meeting in Barangay Manduao, The leaders, on their part, expressed their gratitude for her visit and presence. When asked by Sr. Mª. Inez what helps had been extended to them by the sisters, they said that they are being helped to grow in their spiritual life, their values, their personal relationship with God and with one another and in their way of life and living.
The men also kissed the hand of Mother General, a sign of their respect .

To know more the context and a little of the history of Catarman, the Sisters brought the Mother General and Sr. Jocelyn to some of its more known places such as the ruined church, sunken cemetery and the old volcano.

On February 3, all the sisters left for Cagayan very early in the morning and reached the city safely for a joint encounter with the community in Kong Hua School. At 3:00 p.m. the group had an enriching encounter with Ma Inez , with Sr. Jocelyn as translator. The session brought out a feeling of contentment and hope that all that has transpired will remain imprinted in their minds and hearts but most importantly, their commitment to put them into life to make their life and mission more credible and vibrant.
