St. James Catholic High School Won First Place
The Division of Iloilo hosted the 2008 Science Club Month on September 27, 2008 at Iloilo National High School. Many schools in the Division of Iloilo participated in this event. To challenge the knowledge, capacities and skills of the students in the field of science, several contests were organized such as: Quiz Bee and Science Investigatory Projects. Five students from St. James Catholic High School joined the Science Investigatory Projects on the individual and team categories. Karen Marmolejo, a fourth year student of St. James Catholic High School got first place in the individual category research on Genotoxicity of three commonly known chemicals by allium test. In the team category research entitled Diversity, Density and Diameter of Different Bamboo Species, Jade Onday, Jesril Yyance and Cherisse Anne Ricaforte garnered first place. In their research they were able to identify fifteen different kinds of bamboo in Maasin and their entry won the highest merit because of its originality.
These students will represent the Division of Iloilo to the Regional level which will be held in November 2008. They will compete with the winners from the Division of Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental. Our contestants were recommended to improve their investigatory report with the help of experts both in Genotoxicity of three commonly known chemicals by allium test and the Diversity, Density and Diameter of the Different Bamboo Species.
