Sacred Heart School – Hijas De Jesus Science Fair 2008
Written by:  Mrs. Brenda T. Garces

Science is experiential.  One has to be involved in the different activities to enrich one’s knowledge and explore new discoveries.  Science concepts must be applied for these to become meaningful in the lives of people.

This year’s Science Fair was a two-day event (Nov. 26 & 27) with the theme, “Seeing God’s Hands Beyond the Wonders of Science”.  It gave the pupils and students the chance to experience the significance of Science and to recognize the magnificent power of God controlling everything.  The Science Interactive Activities were conceived, researched and demonstrated by the high school students.  These varied and fascinating activities awakened the interest of the elementary pupils and spurred interaction among them.  The glow in their eyes, the surprised expression on their faces, and spontaneous clapping of their hands were the common reactions of the participants after every demonstration throughout the day, which was more than enough to say that the activity had served its purpose.

The following day, Grades 1 to 3 had a Quiz bowl.  It was amazing to see how the little scientists manipulated their materials and answered the questions!  The intermission number of the selected Grade 1 & 2 pupils, as well as the demonstration of science tricks by some high school students added more to the glow of the activity.  Also, Grades 4, 5 & 6 had their Hands – On Activity Contest.  Pupils had to perform the given task before they could answer the question.  It was indeed challenging especially that it was under time pressure.  What a great learning experience!  Lastly, a poster-making contest was held in the Mini Science Laboratory.  Twenty-six eager “Michaelangelo” contestants from Grades 4, 5 & 6 expressed their ideas about the theme through their impressive work of art!

There is still much to explore, discover and develop in the field of Science, as one high school student said. The Science Fair was just a tiny glimpse of the beauty and wonders of God’s Creation.  Because like the Creator, the world is simply too vast and mysterious for it to be completely fathomable.  We can only be grateful to God and persevere in our quest for knowledge.

Sacred Heart School – Hijas de Jesus Celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception

In a special effort to imitate the virtues of Mother Mary, Sacred Heart School – Hijas de Jesus celebrated the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in a more contemplative way.  The pupils in the Elementary Department viewed the film, “Mary, Daughter of Zion”, had discussions on the Immaculate Conception, and were united in a prayer service in the school chapel.

On the other hand, the high school students reflected on the virtues of Mary through the Triduum Prayer with the following themes:
Day One (December 3, 2008) - Mary’s Openness to the Will of God
Day Two (December 4, 2008) - Mary as the Virgin Most Pure
Day Three (December 5, 2008) - Mary as the Servant of God

It was timely and most fitting that the third day was a Friday and the whole educative community culminated the Triduum Prayer with the celebration of the First Friday Holy Mass.  The faculty members also went home with Marian messages to keep and ponder on.  We truly hope that Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was pleased by the simple yet profound way we honored her.
