SMAD GRADE THREE EXPOSURE ACTIVITY

Last August 2, the Grade III pupils of Stella Maris Academy of Davao had a day with their “kuyas,” the seminarians from the Archdiocese of Davao.  It has been a tradition for the Grade III to go to and interact with the seminarians year after year.  They go in buses, have snacks and lunch with the seminarians, and bring them rice and foodstuff.  But this year was a little different.

With the price of gasoline becoming so stiff, there was no way for the pupils to hire buses to bring them to the seminary.  It was way too costly.  But they did not give up on the idea of having a “fun day” of interaction with their “kuyas.”  If they could not go to the seminaries, then they made sure the seminarians came to Stella Maris.

Early in the morning of that Saturday one could see the Grade III pupils craning their necks, eagerly holding placards and looking for the “kuyas” assigned to them.  Some were calling the names of their “kuyas” at the top of their lungs.  Once they found the person assigned to them, they eagerly held their hands and started pointing out the places they thought their guests would find interesting in the school – the residence of the sisters, their own classrooms, the grotto, the gym, etc.  It was a beautiful sight seeing a seminarian and a small boy or girl, holding hands, roaming the school campus, with the young pupil eagerly chatting away and the seminarians listening intently to the stories of their young hosts.

They had lunch together.  It was “picnic” at the gym, with each tiny group occupying a space, sharing goodies, chatting away.  There was also a program, where both the pupils and the seminarians rendered numbers.  Then the “kuyas” were sent off with four sacks of rice and boxes of canned books.

It was a first for Stella Maris and we think that this experience, which turned out to be so successful, should continue.  Enjoy the pictures and join us in the celebration of the love affair between the kids and their kuyas.
